Heading down the stretch of the regular season, the Westview Lady Chargers tennis team prepared for the upcoming district tennis tournament by splitting two recent outings.
The host Lady Chargers were dealt a 6-1 loss by the Dyersburg Lady Trojans last Tuesday before knocking off the visiting Gibson County Lady Pioneers, 7-0, on Thursday.
Against Dyersburg, WHS got a win at No. 1 singles when Chloe Nance downed Elizabeth Finley, 8-3.
The Lady Chargers came close to a win at No. 4 singles, but Dyersburg’s Faithe Davis held off Brooklyn Burress, 9-7.
In the other singles matches, Dyersburg was victorious at No. 2 when Auramae Northcutt stopped Ashleigh Ary, 8-2; at No. 3 where Sarah Haynes downed Melissa Darroch, 8-4; and at No. 5 when Corena Hasselle defeated Chantia Brown, 8-4.
In doubles action, at No. 1, Lady Trojans Finley and Haynes downed Ary and Nance 8-1. At No. 2 the DHS tandem of Northcutt and Davis stopped Burress and Darroch, 8-1.
In other matches that didn’t count toward the team totals in singles, at No. 6, Westview’s Dylan Brown battled to a 7-7 draw with Kasey Black. At No. 7, Westview picked up a 6-5 win as Alexis Beverly topped Amanda Jones. At No. 8, Westview’s Jennifer Hollis was nipped, 6-5, by Sarah Hasselle. In the lone extra doubles match, Westview’s Dylan Brown and Chantia Brown were defeated by Corena Hasselle and Black, 6-2.
In the win against Gibson County, the Lady Chargers were truly only threatened in No. 1 doubles. The Lady Pioneer duo of Camri Donald and Bethany Roberson were held back by Westview’s Cara Burnham and Alexis Beverly, 7-5. Westview also picked up the point at No. 2 doubles when Dylan Brown and Hollis stopped Desiree Barnett and Ativa Storey, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Chloe Nance breezed to a 6-0 victory over Donald. The 6-0 score also went Westview’s way at No. 4 singles where Burress downed Storey.
At No. 2 singles, Ary defeated Roberson, 6-3, while Lady Charger Burnham dropped Barnett, 6-1. At No. 4 singles Burress blanked Storey, 6-0. With only four active players available, the Lady Pioneers forfeited the No. 5 singles point.
