WHS picks off Lexington

The Westview Lady Chargers ‘picked off’ the host Lexington Lady Tigers, 2-0, in their Region 7-AA Tournament semifinal Monday afternoon in Lexington.
With the win, WHS will play Covington contest on Wednesday and earns a berth in Friday’s Sectional round.
With Lady Tiger Tiffany Keck on first base after a single to open the bottom of the fifth, WHS catcher Mckenzie Norris caught a missed bunt and spotted Keck edging toward second. Norris walked the ball up the infield toward Keck, while Lady Charger second baseman Jenna Hazelwood snuck in behind the runner. Keck was indecisive and Norris flipped the ball to Hazelwood who snapped down the tag for the out.
Two of the next three Lexington batters singled, meaning Norris’ play likely saved a run. Pitcher Shaylon Robb got a key strikeout to end the threat.
“That was awesome. It’s something we only work on once or twice a year,” WHS head coach JB Suiter said. “Today, we beat a team that won a game at the state tournament last year. They’re a good team.”
The Lady Chargers (26-13) got another rock solid effort from Robb who retired Lexington in order in six of seven innings. She struck out seven, giving up just three hits and no walks.
The WHS batters also struggled with Lexington hurler Shelese Arnold, who gave up four hits and a walk while striking out six.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth and WHS hustle created a break. Robb struck out but raced to first on a dropped third strike. Norris put down a sac bunt to advance Robb. After a second out, Katelyn Bowen legged out an infield single, forcing an errant throw that allowed Robb to score and Bowen to move to second. Shanna Chappell’s sharp single up the middle brought home Bowen for a 2-0 lead.
"Shanna came to me a couple of weeks ago and said, 'If I'm not going to be playing in the field, I'm not scared to hit. I want to hit.' So the last four or five games we've had her batting. She came up big tonight," Suiter said. "We had some timely hits in the game. If we're not getting our bunts down, we need timely hitting."
