It’s election time in South Fulton

Staff Reporter
It’s officially election time in South Fulton.
The first reading of an ordinance to call an election to choose city commissioners in two districts was approved by the South Fulton City Commission during its monthly meeting Thursday evening.
The ordinance will require a second reading before becoming final.
According to the proposed ordinance, the election will be held Nov. 2 for the selection of city commissioners from Districts 2 and 3 for four-year terms.
The city is divided into four voting wards and elections take place each even-numbered year. While the seats for Districts 2 and 3 are on the ballot this year, the seats for Districts 1 and 4 will be on the ballot in November 2012.
The District 2 seat is currently held by Tony Perry and the District 3 seat by Thomas Pettigrew, with the District 1 seat held by Charles Moody and the District 4 seat by Keith Curlin, who currently serves as vice mayor.
The city’s mayor — a position currently held by David Crocker — is elected city-wide.
In other action during Thursday evening’s brief meeting, which was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and with prayer led by Perry, the commission:
• Approved a resolution giving appreciation and permission to the Twin Cities Railroad Museum to inhabit space in the South Fulton Municipal Complex.
The city had previously agreed to allow the museum to occupy space at the municipal complex and the resolution gives the two entities something official in writing.
• Heard questions from resident Chris Copelen in regard to whether the city owns a fence row behind a house he recently purchased and plans to clean up. He said trees along the fence row have become overgrown to the point of interfering with power lines and he would like to see it cleared.
Copelen’s matter was referred to city manager Jeff Vowell.
• Learned a city-owned lot on Smith Street has been transferred to the Community Action Network for the construction of a home for a local couple.
• Was informed by Vowell that Verizon representatives will be in town next week to continue discussion of a possible tower site in the city.
• Learned the city’s major road plan was recently certified by the Obion County Commission.
• Was reminded that the next Neighborhood Watch meeting is set for the evening of June 1 at the Harvey O. Vick Community Room at the municipal building.
• Heard a brief update on the Let’s Paint the Town renovation project from Vowell, who said the first work day has been scheduled for June 5. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Twin Cities Chamber of Commerce at (731) 479-7029 for more details. Contributions of funds may be made at any bank in Fulton or South Fulton.
• Congratulated the members of the South Fulton High School Class of 2010, who will graduate tonight.
Curlin and Moody were absent from the meeting.
