Relay event honors victims, survivors
There is a flurry of activity on Highway 22, between Dresden and Gleason. Four communities are coming together, putting the finishing touches on all the preparations, and setting their eyes on obtaining their goal of $58,000.
This weekend, the race track outside of Gleason will be aglow with luminaries and those impacted by the dreaded “C” word during the Weakley east Relay for Life.
There are 11 returning teams and four new teams this year. Returning teams are, BancorpSouth, Bank of Gleason, Beech Springs Baptist Church, Gleason First Baptist Church, Gleason First Methodist Church, Gleason School, Mitchell Transport, Palmersville Family & Friends, Team Northwest TN Motorsports Park, Tumbling Creek Baptist Church, and Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center.
New Relay teams include Angels Among Us, Gleason Fire Department, Team Road Runner and Woodmen of the World.
Teams will begin setting up tonight (Thursday) night and begin selling food at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Music, entertainment, survivor registration and car show registration will also begin at 5 p.m. on Friday.
This year’s line up of entertainment includes the very talented Charles Ross and Micah Arnold. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:30 p.m.
The honorary chairs, Randy Frazier of Gleason, Marguriet Frazier of Dresden, Amy Cox of Sharon, and Pat Stewart of Palmersville will speak from the heart about their journey with cancer.
The Honorary Youth Chairman this year is Jacob Gearin of Sharon. He is a 4th grade student at Sharon School who has endured a miraculous journey with brain cancer survivor.
After the touching luminary service, the torches will be lit in another ceremony. Those who have purchased torches need to be there to light their torch, purchased in memory of or in honor of their loved one’s fight with cancer.
There will, once again this year, be an incredible fireworks show, which is sponsored by Weakley County Rehab and Nursing Center.
Community members will be able to see the fireworks from miles around, but the best seats are the ones that will be set up for them. The fireworks show is set to kick off at 10 p.m., Friday.
Games this year will incorporate the new television show, “Minute to Win It.” Each team will be walking the track all night long to honor those fighting cancer and remembering those whose battle is over.
This will signify that cancer never sleeps, so the Relay-goers will not sleep that night either.
Awards will be presented at 3 a.m. The Fight Back Ceremony will also take place at 3 a.m..
Breakfast with Monte is set for 4 a.m. on Saturday, and the closing ceremonies will be held at 5 a.m.
Everyone is invited to come out and support Relay For Life on Friday, May 21st at the Northwest Tennessee Motorsports Park on Highway 22, between Dresden and Gleason.
