Seminars planned for teachers interested in special education

Posted: Tuesday, June 22, 2010 9:31 pm

The Press 6.22.10 The University of Tennessee at Martin College of Education and Behavioral Sciences will sponsor two seminars on special education on June 24. These seminars, in Room 207, Gooch Hall, are presented through the Graham Seminar Series.
The first seminar will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and is titled “What to Look For - What to Try.” This workshop will focus on strategies and intervention techniques that can be used with children who have been diagnosed or who are showing signs of a disability.
The second seminar will be from 1-4 p.m. in and is titled “Toolkit for Special Educators.” This workshop will focus on various strategies that can be used with students with disabilities in general education or special education classroom settings.
Various behavior strategies, intervention techniques and differentiated instruction topics will be presented and explored. Participants will create items that can be used in their classrooms when working with students with autism.
Teachers will leave the workshop with a toolkit of items and ideas that can be implemented in their classrooms to create a successful learning environment for all students.
The presenter is Laura Izzo, a support specialist for teachers of students with disabilities for the New York City Department of Education. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in literacy education. She holds advanced certification in teaching students with disabilities and school administration. She is also pursuing a doctorate at Long Island University. Her areas of specialization and research interests include behavioral modifications and working with individuals with autism.
Those planning to attend are asked to contact Kristy Crawford, administrative specialist, at 731-881-7125 or kcrawford@utm.edu.
