Photo: Governor's School for Agricultural Sciences visits Nashville | Tennessee Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences, University of Tennessee at Martin, Nashville
The Press 6.22.10 High school students from across the state attending the seventh Tennessee Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences (TGSAS) at the University of Tennessee at Martin had the opportunity to travel to Nashville for a variety of activities. They took part in a presentation to Gov. Phil Bredesen to honor his vision, leadership and support of the governor’s school. Commissioner of Agriculture Ken Givens accepted the award on his behalf from Dr. Joey Mehlhorn, UT Martin TGSAS director. Pictured are, from left, Terry Oliver, deputy commissioner of agriculture; Givens; Rep. Stratton Bone, House Agriculture Committee chair; Mehlhorn, also a UT Martin professor of agricultural economics; and Dr. Jerry Gresham, UT Martin Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources chair and College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences interim dean. Students also toured the state capitol and visited with Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey and other legislators, toured the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation headquarters in Columbia and toured the Nashville Sounds Stadium and learned about turf management.  They capped the day by visiting Ellington Agriculture Center in Nashville and toured the Agriculture Museum. While on the UT Martin campus, students will be involved in research, living laboratories and study opportunities and will expand their knowledge of food, genetics, agriculture, veterinary science, engineering and the sustainable use of renewable natural resources. TGSAS is staffed by faculty from UT Martin with guest presenters from throughout the United States.
