WM board continuing to clean up the city

Woodland Mills’ mayor and board of aldermen are doing their best to make their city look better.
Part of their effort is based in the Mount Herman neighborhood, where a Community Development Block Grant is being used to build new homes for several residents.
While a portion of Monday night’s meeting was dedicated to receiving an update about the progress of those homes, another topic was a piece of property being used by the landowner for storage.
Complaints have been made at City Hall by some residents about the property, where items are placed out in the open in a manner which one person said looked like a “dump.”
Mayor Wade Carrington said he spoke with the property owner who informed him what is being stored there is personal duck hunting equipment.
Alderman Waymon Reagan said residents in the area are trying to clean up their neighborhood and they should not have to have that situation. A suggestion was then made that the property owner could build a storage building in which to place his property.
Carrington said he will have a letter written to the property owner and include with it a copy of the ordinance regarding the personal property.
Other areas discussed at the meeting included a lot between Mount Herman and Carr Street which has a trailer full of cans located on it; and a property at Cedar and Gum streets, where limbs have been piled in the back yard and a shed roof is collapsing under the weight of a limb which has been there since the ice storm.
After the meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Reagan and in a prayer by alderman Tom Menees, the board:
• Agreed to add money to a general fund CD and a sewer CD.
• Learned $59 has been paid towards the 2009 property taxes and $516 remains unpaid from 2008.
• Approved the financial statements, including total assets of $6,017.59 in the refuse collection fund, $5,683.95 in the street aid fund, $539,717.55 in the sewer fund and $118,283.18 in the general fund.
• Learned no news has been heard about clearing from under a bridge.
• Was informed an old flag had been given to maintenance personnel to take to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post for proper disposal.
• Learned a letter was received from the state stating the city would not receive CDBG funds in the 2010-11 fiscal year.
• Was reminded the next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 9.
