Stiffer competition tested WHS in second scrimmage
Stiffer competition tested WHS in second scrimmage | Westview Chargers football, Chester County football, Don Coady, Tanner Spencer, Seth Daniels, Will Thompson, Desmond Williams, Abraham haddad, Martin, Tennessee

Not so fast — Westview freshman Seth Daniels chased down the Chester County quarterback and forced an incompletion during scrimmage action Saturday morning. The WHS Chargers won 6-2 over their visitors. Photo by Stephanie Sturgis
It didn’t come as easily as the scrimmage victory over Jackson Central-Merry, but the Westview Chargers still managed to down their second preseason foe, 6-2, on Saturday morning at Westview’s practice field.
The Chester County Eagles had trouble slowing the Chargers’ mixture of bubble screens and quick passes to the flat with runs by the tailbacks and keepers by quarterback Tanner Spencer. The Westview varsity outscored the Eagles 4-2, while the Chargers’ junior varsity and freshmen outdueled their foes, 2-0.
The Charger varsity defense allowed two big plays on sweeps for scores. Poor tackling on the edges aided Chester County on the touchdown runs. Other than those long sprints of 57 and 56 yards, Westview kept the Eagles pretty much in check and frequently had a presence in the opposing backfield.
After forcing a pair of CC punts, the Westview offense got in gear on its second possession. Spencer converted a fourth down with a keeper and hit Seth Waterfield and Cody Blake with quick passes in the drive. Blake’s catch set up Abraham Haddad’s 9-yard touchdown run.
After the Eagles’ first option pitch for a big scoring run, the WHS offense marched again. Haddad had six touches on the 14-play drive. His 15-yard catch and run on a screen pass spotted the ball at the CC 3-yard line. With Haddad on the sideline with a leg issue, Desmond Johnson took the scoring honors.
After that possession the junior varsity and freshmen squads hit the field. Westview put together two scoring drives. R.J. Scott was given a hole and ran through for 17 yards. Quan Williams ran in a 3-yarder.
The varsity then returned to the field. Chester County added its second long TD run and then intercepted a Spencer pass. The Westview defense stepped up and forced a turnover on downs, allowing just a yard.
The WHS offense answered with a 67-yard drive capped by a Spencer 27-yard run to paydirt.
Westview then forced a CC turnover, as Jake Vincent fell on a fumble.
The final WHS scoring drive alternated runs by Williams and Johnson with Johnson running in the tally from 12-yards out.
Westview will play in the annual Huntingdon Jamboree on Friday night taking on Bruceton in the third quarter. Action begins at 7.
