The University of Tennessee at Martin Department of Public Safety is asking for information that would lead to the arrest of the person or persons who shot a horse last weekend at the university’s Agricultural and Natural Resources Teaching Complex. The horse belonged to the university’s equestrian team. The horse, named Cash, was found injured by a student worker who was feeding animals early Sunday morning, Oct. 10, in a university-owned pasture. Dr. Jason Roberts, UT Martin animal science faculty member and veterinarian, examined the horse. Due to the severity of the injuries, the horse was euthanized. A post mortem examination at the university’s West Tennessee Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory found that the injuries were caused by a gunshot. A deer that died from a gunshot wound was found near where the horse was discovered. Anyone who heard gunshots last weekend in the Gardner-Hyndsver Road or Old Fulton Road areas is asked to contact the UT Martin Department of Public Safety, 731-881-7777, or the Martin Police Department, 731-587-5355. Persons with information can also call Crimestoppers at 587-2611 or text a tip anonymously at utm@tipnow.org.
