NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol promoting 2010 National School Bus Safety Week with its theme “Cross in View. It’s the Right Thing to Do.” Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell said in a news release that a school bus is one of the safest modes of transportation, but children must be careful when getting on or off. Parents should teach their school bus-riding children to cross the street in clear view of the bus driver. The “danger zone” for a school bus is the area 10 feet around the vehicle. The Highway Patrol also is reminding drivers that they must slow down in school zones and obey the school bus’s stop sign. National School Bus Safety Week this year runs from Oct. 18-22.
