A Union City resident reports he received a phone call from a “scammer” with a foreign accent who claimed that the resident had won a $500 Walmart gift card as the result of a random drawing. The caller said he needed $1.99 in shipping charges before the card could be activated and asked for the resident’s credit card or debit card number to cover the fee.
The resident said he was certain the call was a scam because, while he shops at Walmart, he has never registered for anything there.
A second call, from the same (630) 869-6831 number, resulted in another attempt to get the resident to provide the personal credit card information.
Area residents are reminded never to give out personal financial information of any kind to callers, online contacts or those making such requests by mail or in person.
