Third-graders apply for work in Santa’s toy shop

Posted: Thursday, December 23, 2010 12:16 pm

The Messenger, December 23, 2010
Third-graders in Mellany Warner’s class at Union City Elementary School wrote the following job applications in their class recently. Their teacher explained how the assignment developed after a Messenger reporter heard about the project and visited the school to read the letters that were displayed in the hall outside the classroom.
“It was very interesting in my class yesterday. We were going to write a letter to Santa, but after I heard all that they wanted and told them how expensive their wish lists were, I told my class what they really needed were jobs!” Mrs. Warner says.
“So I totally changed the direction of my activity and had them write a persuasive paragraph to Santa, applying for a job in his workshop. They had to tell what department they wanted to work in and write three sentences telling why they were the best person for the job.
“Then they had to add a closing sentence. It turned out to be really cute and really made them think.
“I even added that Santa sends a bill! (He does at my house — doesn’t he send one at yours?)
“So they needed to be thoughtful of their parents, I suggested, when asking for things. They did not believe me, but I reminded them that the elves needed to be paid – they have ‘elf families’ to support as well.”
