DSCC provides tax assistance

For the fifth year, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites on the Dyersburg State Community College campus and at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center in Covington are providing free tax filing services for those area taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $49,000.
Dyersburg State is offering the service as a member of the Family Self-Sufficiency Alliance of West Tennessee.
 The Dyersburg VITA center is located in the Learning Resource Center on the Dyersburg State campus. The center opened on Jan. 24 and provides tax services Mondays and Thursdays from 5-7:30 p.m. through April 14.
The VITA site in Covington also opened Jan. 24 and provides assistance Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-7 p.m. through April 13.
In 2010, the Dyersburg State VITA sites enabled 488 area residents to receive a combined total of $684,542 in tax refunds.
DSCC joined the Family Self-Sufficiency Alliance of West Tennessee five years ago. The Alliance is active in promoting economic self-sufficiency and financial stability by hosting, with the Internal Revenue Service and Amaerican Assoociation of Retired People, free tax preparation sites throughout West Tennessee.
The Alliance of West Tennessee was formed by the United Way of West Tennessee in cooperation with the IRS.
 Local businesses, non-profit agencies, members of the faith-based community and the public sector are all members of the alliance. Dyersburg State is involved by hosting the sites and recruiting volunteers to complete returns.
