Jack and the Beanstalk presented in Lovett Auditorium at MSU

Posted: Monday, January 31, 2011 8:01 pm

Heat up the wintry days and nights with a new twist on an old tale.
The department of theatre at Murray (Ky.) State University will present Michele Vacca’s “Jack and the Beanstalk” Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Additional performances are Feb. 8 at 9:30 a.m. and noon, with the final performances on Feb. 9 and 10 at 10 a.m.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and reservations are not necessary for this production.
With a version of “Jack” that presents the story with step dancing and a contemporary flair, children and adults will enjoy the show.
According to Pamela Hamilton, the production’s director, “We have taken a new look at this classic story and added a few modern twists and turns. There will be some pretty contemporary dance with some urban stepping involved as well as different settings and costumes than what most productions of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ would look like.”
According to David Balthrop, chairman of the Department of Theatre, “One of the great things about working in the theatre is the ability to look at productions through various lenses. Taking a classic show like ‘Jack’ and giving it a contemporary flair and flavor gives people a chance to see the show in a new light. Everytime you present a show, it is possible to bring something new out of the production. This was a great chance to update a classic tale and bring it to a young, hip audience.”
The story is the same story that everyone knows and loves. The favorite cow, Clarabelle, the Giant and the Golden Goose are all in the show, as are Jack, his loving mother and the Magic Harp. Will the magic beans come to life and bring the beanstalk with the riches for Jack and his family? Or will the Giant stop Jack’s plan and keep the loot all for herself?
The admission charge for the show is $2.50.
