Murray State campaign tops $58 million mark

Murray (Ky.) State University has seen its fundraising rocket to $58.7 million — a record amount that comes with two years still to go in its $60 million comprehensive campaign.
“Hold Thy Banner High: The Campaign for the Students of Murray State University” officially ends Dec. 31, 2012, but with the extraordinary success experienced thus far, officials have good reason to expect the $60 million mark to be shattered.
“In an environment of declining support from the state’s budget, the work of generating other sources of funding has never been more critical,” said Dr. Randy Dunn, MSU president. “The amazing success to date of ‘Hold Thy Banner High’ proves the point that even in a tough economic climate, people who care about Murray State will make our university a priority. I’m extremely gratified that our many alumni, friends and supporters have responded with their generous donations to help advance our common goal of enhancing student scholarship support and the academic mission of this great institution.”
The campaign FY 2011 total is now at $8.7 million, which exceeds the former yearly record set in 2008, and is on pace to exceed $10 million, noted Bob Jackson, associate vice president for institutional advancement and campaign director.
“It is very rewarding to see what this campaign has done and continues to do for Murray State University,” national campaign co-chair David Dill said. “The level of scholarship support has nearly doubled since 2005 and academic enhancements have been transformational to many academic units with new endowed professorships, major equipment purchases and faculty awards, to name a few.”
“When we started this campaign, we created a very long list of initiatives in order to advance Murray State University. We are well on our way to achieving the many campaign goals we established,” Jackson explained. “I am very confident that when we end this campaign in 2012, we will have achieved all of these visionary goals to make MSU an even better place as we move forward.”
Campaign co-chair Jim Cash agrees with Jackson’s outlook on the result of the campaign.
“From the very start of this campaign, (my wife) Sue and I knew it would be highly successful,” Cash said. “Murray State has the finest alumni, friends and supporters and has become a national model in academic quality and student support. I am very proud that nearly 50 percent of this campaign is dedicated to scholarship support in order to provide opportunities for the next generation of Racers.”
Dr. Jane Wells, a member of the trio of national campaign chairs, expressed her thanks to the thousands of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations that have generously supported the campaign and noted she is especially proud of the establishment of the 1922 Society that will create a major scholarship endowment for children and grandchildren of MSU alumni.
She encouraged anyone who has not taken the opportunity to participate in the campaign to do so.
