Upcoming arts events at the University of Tennessee at Martin

• The “atomic age” represented both the great technological promise and the darkest fear to stalk America after World War II. The marvel of nuclear power reflected both scientific achievement in the modern age and also unthinkable possibilities for waste and destruction. Unsurprisingly, both views were reflected in popular culture. 

“The Life Atomic: Growing Up in the Shadow of the A-bomb” is an exhibit created by the Rogers Historical Museum in Arkansas and is currently exhibited in the gallery of the J. Houston Gordon Museum in the Paul Meek Library at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Using texts, images, and objects from the time, visitors will be introduced to key issues of the Atomic Age and see how the atom shaped family and social life during the mid-20th century.

The gallery for the J. Houston Gordon Museum is adjacent to the Corbitt Special Collections reading area, just off the atrium in the library. It is open to the public without charge weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 731-881-7094.

• Cory Bozard, senior music performance major from Newbern, will perform his senior percussion recital at 3 p.m., March 27, in Room 112, Boling University Center. 

Bozard has been studying percussion for five years with Dr. Julie Hill, associate professor of music. He will perform a jazz-influenced vibraphone solo, a fast-paced marimba piece, a drum set duet with Hill and a 12-minute work for marimba, featuring percussionists Colby Snider, Hamilton Moore and Dennis Youngblood. Musical works included are compositions of Christopher Deane, Casey Cangelosi, Jesse Monkman, Virgil Moorefield and Martin Fabricius.

• Michael Yandell, a senior piano music education major at the University of Tennessee at Martin, will perform his senior piano recital at 7:30 p.m., March 22, in Watkins Auditorium of Boling University Center.

Yandell, of Union City, will perform works including “Andante and Variations in F Minor,” by Joseph Haydn; “Nocturne No. 13 in C-minor, Op. 48, No. 1,” by Frederic Chopin; and “Capriccio in F-sharp Minor, Op. 5,” by Felix Mendelssohn.

• The University of Tennessee at Martin Department of Visual and Theatre Arts will host a series of senior art exhibitions, featuring Brad Henderson, a visual art studio emphasis student from Union City; Kayla Stark, a graphic design emphasis student from Lobelville; and Donnie Franklin, a visual art studio emphasis student from Goodlettsville.  The exhibition will begin with an opening reception, slated from 5-7 p.m., March 22, on the second floor of the Paul Meek Library.  

Exhibitions sponsored by the Department of Visual and Theatre Arts will be located in the Paul Meek Library while the Fine Arts Building undergoes renovations.

The exhibition will continue through April 1. It will be free and open to the public.
