Dear Editor,

Why does our new electric company building have to be lit up like a stadium? Has anyone else in Weakley County noticed and thought the same thing? As I paid my electric bill for last month, I wondered how much less it would be if the managers at the Weakley County Municipal Electric System would turn off two-thirds of those lights. As we all know, our economy is struggling. We need to conserve our energy and our money. I try to teach my children to turn lights off when they are not in the room. Maybe WCMES should consider that too.

I feel that there are other alternatives as opposed to leaving lights on all night. What about motion sensor lights?

If WCMES did turn off some lights, would it make a difference in my electric bill?

Dear Editor,

I feel that a proper introduction of the NEA (National Education Association) and its affiliates such as the TEA (Tennessee Education Association) is in order. 

Not only the public, but teachers as well, need to become aware of what kind of organization they are supporting. It would be best to allow them to introduce themselves. 

The following is a word-for-word quote by one of the top NEA executives: “It is not because we care about children, and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power and we have power because there are over 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues.”

If, as stated, this organization doesn’t care about children, is it reasonable to believe they care about teachers either? Could they be telling the truth? Could they only care about the dues the teachers pay and the power it gives them? 

The following is a quote of Willard Givens who was head of the NEA for 17 years:   “The great task of the school is to counteract the influence of home and Church” and “to undermine the uniqueness of family life.”

Does this reflect an organization that we Tennesseans want influencing our children’s education? Please recognize that I have expressed no opinion above. I have simply stated fact, quoted NEA executives and asked questions for the reader to consider.

I do, however, ask that you consider calling your state representative and senator and express your desire or lack thereof for this organization to continue influencing our children’s education in Tennessee.
