Greenfield ladies still team to beat

Posted: Friday, March 18, 2011 12:02 am

The Greenfield girls’ tennis team picked up where it left off.

The Lady Yellowjackets, who advanced to the Class A-AA State Tournament and won the District 14A-AA crown among numerous other honors last season, continued their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-3 edging of historical rural West Tennessee powerhouse Union City.

The Greenfield ladies tennis team returns to the court on Monday at Union City in a rematch of the two squads.

This afternoon’s local tennis slate has Westview at home against Crockett County. The match is slated to begin at 4.

On Tuesday afternoon at UT Martin, the Lady Yellowjackets battled both UC and the elements in an outing that was played in weather probably more favorable for a football game.

Greenfield’s singles triumphs came from numerous spots on the depth chart.

No. 2 seed Taylor Hatcher edged Tara Elam 8-6, while Lady Yellowjacket four seed Kaylee Kesterson defeated Laura Reed Smith by a like final.

In the battle of fifth seeds, Greenfield’s Lauren Rush bested Jenna Miller 8-5.

Other singles play had Lady Twister Anna Moore as an 8-1 victory over Emily Allen 8-1 while Gracie Frankum recorded UC’s other singles win — a hard-fought 9-8 triumph (7-2 tiebreaker) over Kendal Cook.

In tandem action, Moore and Frankum bested Allen and Kesterson by an 8-6 margin.

In the other doubles match, Hatcher and Cook prevailed as they downed the UC combination of Elam and Jenna Moore 8-3.
