Union City police are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon at an East Main Street residence.
Police responded to the fire at 1610 East Main St. shortly after 4 p.m. and arrived to find a vehicle was on fire inside the carport and had caught the side of the house on fire. Union City firefighters extinguished the blaze, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police reported it appeared the fire had started in the passenger side back seat of the vehicle due to the majority of the damage being in that area. The vehicle had been backed into the carport and it was the portion closest to the house.
According to the report, fire officials and police investigators believe the fire appeared to be intentionally set since there was no reason for a fire to have started in that part of an unoccupied vehicle which was not running at the time.
A resident of the home told police she heard what sounded like someone throw something at the wall and then crackling noises coming from the carport. Residents went outside and discovered the fire.
