W'view finding its 'way'

Westview found a way to win against two formidable opponents on Thursday and Friday.
The Lady Chargers bested South Fulton, which advanced to the Class A State Tournament a year ago and was the final public school standing in that classification, in a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
W’view won the first contest 3-2 in seven innings and prevailed 7-2 in the second game.
Meanwhile, Westview defeated Obion Central — which downed the Lady Chargers at the Dawg Pound Tournament earlier this spring — via a 4-3 margin in nine innings on Thursday.
“Earlier in the year, I said a good team finds a way to win,” Westview skipper J.B. Suiter said. “Winning against the caliber of teams that we have in close games has helped us to build up experience heading into the district tournament.
“We’re going to see good pitching like we have the past two weeks and to advance through the tournament, we have to win the close games. We should now have the confidence to know that we are capable of winning close games and be able to make some noise in the postseason as a result.”
In other action from late last week, Gleason lost twice (10-0 and 9-0) at McKenzie on Friday.
The Lady Chargers return to action this week in the District 13AA Tournament at Dyersburg.
Dresden and Gleason are to play this week in the District 13A Tournament, while Greenfield participates in the District 14A Tournament
FRIDAY
Westview 3-7, SF 2-2
Three singles in the seventh inning and a calculated risk gave the Lady Chargers (27-6) the reward of victory in Game 1.
During said seventh canto, Kayla Guthrie singled with two outs and Meagan Prince followed suit with a safety. Then, Alex Hughey hit a dribbler to the shortstop.
Suiter never stopped Guthrie and sent her racing for home.
South Fulton’s shortstop threw to first, but was unable to get Hughey and Guthrie slid in safely at the plate for the winning run.
Winning pitcher Shaylon Robb struck out 10 — to up her season total to 207 K’s.
Guthrie and Prince were both 2-for-4 in the opener, while Holly Morris had one hit.
In the second game, Robb finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Guthrie drove in a trio and Mary Kirk Mesimer singled once.
Prince fanned three and walked zero to gain the pitching win.
McKenzie 10-9, Gleason 0-0
The Lady Bulldogs’ biggest hit of the game came in the first inning of the opening game of the twinbill loss.
Briana Jones smacked a double in said frame to account for Gleason’s lone extra-base hit during the doubleheader.
Jaclyn Montgomery and Calay Smith both had one hit during Game 1, while Sami Verdell walked.
Montgomery also reached via an error.
Smith the was the losing pitcher in both contests.
In Game 1, the Lady Rebels scored two in the first inning, three in the second and five in the fourth.
During the second game, the Lady Bulldogs had zero hits, but Smith walked and Erica Morgan was hit by a pitch.
McKenzie tallied five in the first frame, two in the second and a pair in the fourth.
THURSDAY
Westview 4, OC 3
With two outs in the ninth inning, Hannah Emberton doubled to put a runner in scoring position.
Guthrie came through in the clutch with a bloop single to center field that plated what turned out to be the game’s winning run.
Prince struck out 11 on her way to the mound victory.
Offensively, Guthrie scored a run and finished 2-for-4.
Mesimer had the longest single hit of the afternoon — a solo home run and Emberton was 2-for-4.
