focusing on football

The Union City Parks and Recreation Summer Instructional Program is hosting a football camp this week and another next week.
This week’s camp, which is free to participate in, is open to boys that will be in grades 3-5 in the fall.
Instruction is to begin at 8 a.m. and go until 11 each day through Friday.
Next week’s camp, which will have the same hours and lasts the entire week, is for young men slated to be in grades 6-8 during the 2011-12 school year.
Members of the Union City High School coaching staff will instruct the gridiron hopefuls.

tell scramble results

The trio of Linda Moore, Beverly Yates and Wanda Brown combined to finish at 2-under-par and win the Hickman Country Club’s Ladies League outing last Thursday.
The combination of Katie Adams, LeAnn Gantt and Jackie Russell earned second place at one-under-par.
Janice Hanna was the closest to the pin.
The ladies play every Thursday evening at 5:30. Those interested in playing are encouraged to call (270) 236-9128.

Railroaders on the rise in OVL baseball order

With two weeks remaining in the Ohio Valley League regular season, the Fulton Railroaders are just two games out of first place.
The Railroaders (14-15) trail league-leading Marion (15-12) after winning over the first-place Bobcats 5-4 in 10 innings Saturday night. Brock Downey went 2-for-3, Rob Hogencamp had two RBIs and Mikee Moore scored three times for Fulton, which pushed across an unearned run that was the difference.
The Railroaders have a doubleheader  at Owens-boro this evening.
The playoffs for the four-team wooden bat collegiate summer league will begin July 26.

UK defensive players
in national award talk

LEXINGTON (AP) — Two Kentucky defensive players have been added to watch lists for prestigious national awards.
Linebacker Danny Trevathan has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which honors the defensive player of the year. The senior from Leesburg, Fla., led the Southeastern Conference in tackles last season with 144 and led the Wildcats with 16 tackles for loss.
Offensive lineman Larry Warford is on the watch list of the 2011 Outland Trophy.
