UC baseball tryouts
set for Friday at Elam

Head coach Jeremy Maddox will hold tryouts for his 2012 Union City High School baseball team on Friday.
The auditions will take place at Elam Stadium at 2 p.m.
All prospective members of the team must try out — regardless of whether they were on the squad last season or not.
Players should bring their own workout gear.
For further information, call UCHS at 885-2373.

Weakley Co. players
dot all-state baseball

Greenfield teammates Dalton Potts and Heath Crouse, along with Dresden slugger Matt Beaty, were named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Class 1A All State baseball team today.
Potts, a UT Martin-bound southpaw, posted a 9-1 record with a sparkling 1.30 earned run average in helping the Yellowjackets to the sectionals for a third straight year this past spring. He fanned 101 in 54 innings and opponents hit just .170 against him. Potts also batted .463 for G’field (20-8), which gave eventual single-A state champion Riverside its toughest postseason game — falling 1-0 in the sectionals and beaten by an unearned run in the seventh.
Crouse batted .462 with team-highs of eight home runs and 41 RBIs. He fanned only six times in 28 games and committed just three errors all season as an infielder. Crouse had a slugging percentage of .817.
Dresden’s Beaty, a 48th-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft in June, was a slugging third baseman for the Lions. He hit a gaudy .627 with a slugging percentage of 1.000 while smacking eight doubles four homers and driving in 34 runs.
Beaty commanded much respect from opposing hurlers, drawing 34 walks as he was constantly pitched around in the Dresden lineup.
The Milan battery of pitcher Miles Anderson and catcher Caleb Powell and infielder Austin Taylor of Crockett County all made the Class 2A glitter unit.
A complete list can be found on page 15.

Railroaders up early
in OVL playoff series

The Fulton Railroaders jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings and went on to beat Marion 9-3 in their opening round Ohio Valley League playoff series Tuesday night.
Both the second-seeded Railroaders and No. 1 Owensboro, which beat Tradewater 4-2 Tuesday, now hold 1-0 leads in their respective best-of-three series heading into Game 2s tonight at their home fields.
Mikee Moore went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI for Fulton against Marion Tuesday, while Brandon Eggenschwiler had three hits and Rob Hogenkamp drove home three tallies.
Former Union City High School standout Colton Speed did not see action in the game for the Railroaders.
Tonight’s game at Lohaus Field will begin at 7:05.
The two first-round series winners will play for the postseason championship in a three-game set that is scheduled to begin Friday night.
Game 1 will be at the lower seed.
