The Messenger 08.10.11 Jennifer Davis of Troy recently graduated from Murray (Ky.) State University with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science/athletic training. She is the daughter of John and Jeanette Davis of Troy. In addition, the Board of Certification Inc. recently announced the certification of Miss Davis as an athletic trainer. To become a BOC certified athletic trainer, Miss Davis completed a nationally-accredited athletc training education program in addition to passing a rigorous national exam. To retain certification, ATs must demonstrate completion of a specific number of medically-related continuing education credits every three years and adhere to the BOC Standards of Professional Practice. Athletic training is practiced by ATs, healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities. ATs are highly-qualified healthcare professionals educated in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied healthcare profession and the AMA recommends ATs in every high school to keep America’s youth safe and healthy. — — — Krysten Harris of Union City and Brett Cash of Troy have each been awarded $1,200 scholarships from the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation. Miss Harris received the E.W. James Memorial Award, while Cash received the TGCSA Award. Miss Harris will be a freshman at the University of Tennessee at Martin and plans to pursue a degree in chemistry. Cash will be a freshman at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and plans to pursue a degree in sports medicine. TGEF scholarship recipients were recognized at the Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association’s recent annual convention at Sevierville Events Center. This year, TGEF awarded 146 scholarships worth $164,250. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over $2.8 million in scholarships. Graduating high school seniors and college students who are employed by a TGCSA member company are eligible for scholarships.
