New poll shows no change in Rebels’ spot
No news was not necessarily bad news for Obion Central.
The Rebels remained at No. 9 in the Class 4A Associated Press prep football rankings, released Monday afternoon.
OC, which beat Westview 33-17 to improve to 3-0 for just the fifth time in the 51-year history of the program, was part of a Top 10 that had little change from a week ago.
Only Chattanooga Red Bank (2-0) — which flip-flopped with Liberty (2-1) in the 7-8 slots — and 3-0 Chester County, which entered the poll at No. 10, were in different spots than last week.
Signal Mountain collected 13 of 17 first-place votes cast by AP member writers and broadcasters to retain the top spot in 4A.
Obion Central totaled 45 points — 10 less than Liberty — but more than doubling last week’s total (22).
The Liberty/Obion Central/Chester County trio, along with No. 2 Lexington, gave rural West Tennessee four teams among the Top 10.
The remainder of the rankings in the other classifications was also virtually the same as last week.
All six Division I listings had the same No. 1 teams.
Of local interest, Henry County (3-0), a 45-14 winner over Kenwood, stayed at No. 3 in 5A.
In Class 3A, 3-0 Milan, which blasted Gibson County 54-7, is still No. 3, with Camden again fourth heading into this week’s game at Westview after enjoying an open date last Friday.
The double-A pecking order saw Humboldt (2-1) remain at No. 6, with McKenzie, now 1-1, moving up to seventh from eighth after beating then-10th ranked Dresden 19-7. Surprisingly, the loss aided the standing of the Lions, who moved up two places to No. 8 after the loss.
In Class 1A, the top six (South Pittsburg, Wayne County, Perry County, Huntingdon, Greenback and Columbia Academy) stayed the same.
Huntingdon, which has beaten its first three foes by a cumulative score of 100-20, will play host to Union City Friday night at Paul Ward Stadium, marking the Tornadoes’ third ranked opponent in the first four weeks of the 2011 campaign.
A complete poll can be found on page seven.
