Biz seminars planned in October

Customer Service Seminar
Oct. 5
The University of Tennessee at Martin REED Center has partnered with the Twin Cities Chamber of Commerce to host a seminar on the importance of customer service. The lecture, “Customer Service: It’s all About the Guest in Your Business,” is scheduled for noon-2 p.m., Oct. 5, in the Harvey Vick Room at the South Fulton Municipal Complex.
Landy Fuqua, with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, will instruct the seminar. Fuqua will focus on improving customer experiences and viewing each customer as a priority for success. Employers are encouraged to bring additional employees to the session to learn the do’s and don’ts of customer service.
The registration fee is $10 and lunch is included. Advance registration is required by Oct. 3. To reserve a seat, contact the Twin Cities Chamber at (731) 479-7029.

Doing Business with the Government
Oct. 6
Small business owners and employees are invited to attend a seminar hosted by the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon, Oct. 6 at the University of Tennessee at Martin REED Center.
The seminar, “Government Contracting-How to do Business With the Government,” will help business owners understand the basics of selling to the government and private industry. Participants will also gain the technical resources necessary to establish support networks for securing and performing both government and private contracts.
Instructors Saundra Jackson, with the Small Business Association, and Russell Toone, with the University of Tennessee Procurement Technical Assistance Center, will focus on how businesses can prepare for federal government contracting and how to successfully market and build relations with buyers and contracting officers.
This workshop is free and open to the public.
The UT Martin REED Center is located at 406 South Lindell St. in Martin.

Small Business
Advice
Oct. 6
 Erik Markin, University of Tennessee at Martin Regional Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Center/Tennessee Small Business Development Center consultant, will help aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners with business advice from 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 6 at the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce in Dresden.
Markin recently joined the TSBDC after spending five years in the financial industry and owning and operating two small businesses. He will be giving advice about business planning, financing options, marketing, customer service, cash flow and other issues.
The consultations are one-on-one, confidential and free.

Ouickbooks
Class Offered
Oct. 12
QuickBooks BASIC/BEGINNING Course is being offered from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at The REED Center. There will be a break for lunch.
QuickBooks has been a leading accounting software for small businesses for many years due to its powerful, yet user-friendly features.
Through the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) QuickBooks basic training course students will learn how to properly set up and run QuickBooks to fit business needs. Topics include:
• Accounting basics (define and understand terms such as debits, credits, assets, liabilities, equity, income statement, balance sheet)
• Working with bank accounts (write checks, record deposits, reconcile)
 • Set up of your business on QuickBooks (develop chart of accounts, bank accounts, etc.)
• Recording sales and receiving payments
• Entering and paying vendor bills
Fee is $75 paid at time of registration.  Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express will be accepted. Seating is limited.
