Westview whips GC;
set for D’burg match

Kayla Guthrie put up a hat trick and almost came around for another as Westview defeated Gibson County 9-0 Monday night in girls’ high school soccer play.
Guthrie scored five goals, while Katelyn Luthi, Melissa Darroch, Shelby Donavant and Emily Plunk added one each.
Makenzie Vincent had a save, and Kelsey Hauhe saved three in goal.
Westview improves its record to 10-2 and will host Dyersburg today at 5:30 p.m. in a game that will determine the top spot overall in the district.
 
Kentucky state golfer
has family in Dresden

Travis Griffith of Marshall County High School qualified for Kentucky State Golf Championship as a result of his play in the regional round earlier this week.
Griffith, the son of Tony and Pam Griffith of Benton, Ky., and grandson of Bill and Brenda Griffith of Dresden, shot a 76 in the First Region Tournament to finish third among the individual qualifiers.
Griffith’s state qualifying score is six strokes back of the top player in regional action across the state. Connor Haas, a freshman for Fourth Region champion West Jessamine, fired a 70
The Kentucky State Tournament will be held at Bowling Green Country Club Oct. 4-5.

Duck, goose calling
coming to region

Final Flight Outfitters has announced an extravaganza of duck and goose calling competitions to be held Oct. 15-16.
These major calling contests offer five chances to qualify for the World Duck Calling Championship in Stutt-gart, Ark., to be held later in the season.
The Grand American Duck Regional will be joining the U.S. Open Duck Regional, the Bayou de Chien Duck Regional, the TN State for Tennessee residents and the KY State for Kentucky residents. There will also be junior competitions in duck and goose as well as the TN State Goose Calling Competition for adults.
The action begins Oct. 15 with the Jr./Intermediate Duck at 9 a.m. with the KY State Duck immediately following. The Bayou De Chien Duck Regional will begin at noon with the Grand American Duck Regional to follow at 3 p.m., ending the Saturday contests.
 Sunday 9 a.m. will signal the start of the Jr. Goose competition with the TN State Goose will follow. The weekend events will conclude with the TN State Duck at 11 a.m. and the U.S. Open Duck Regional at 1 p.m.
All eight contests will be held on site at Final Flight Outfitters.

UTM women riders
fall short to champs

The UT Martin women’s equestrian team opened its 2011 season Sunday by coming up short to defending overall national champion Auburn at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
Auburn won the Hunt Seat, 6-3. In Equitation on the Flat, UTM’s Caroline Cramer had an 87-point ride to claim the Skyhawks lone point. Auburn won the event, 4-1.
Auburn and UTM tied 2-2 in Equitation over Fences. Auburn edged UT Martin 401-391 in the raw score.
On the Western side, Auburn won both the Horsemanship (4-1) and Reigning (3-1) by a 7-2 total. Published in The WCP 9.29.11
