Calkins to speak
at UT Martin

Geoff Calkins, award-winning sports columnist for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, will present “From Harvard to Happiness: Looking for the good stuff in the sometimes seamy world of sports” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at UT Martin.
His presentation is scheduled in Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center and is offered through the university’s Academic Speaker Series.
Calkins has twice been named Best Sports Columnist in the country by the Associated Press Sports Editors and has won the Green Eyeshade Award as the Best Sports Columnist in the South three times. He has also covered six Olympics and 12 Super Bowls.
After graduating from Harvard College and then Harvard Law School, Calkins earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism. He has worked with People magazine, the United States Attorney’s office and the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
Calkins wrote about the Westview softball team last year, sparking the idea to include him in the speakers program.
