Samburg: Pay or go to court
By KEVIN BOWDEN
Staff Reporter
Samburg continues to deal with delinquent garbage collection accounts and it appears letters to those who are behind paying their bills have done little to resolve the problem.
The Samburg mayor and board of aldermen met Tuesday evening and discussed the delinquent accounts as well as an ongoing tourism project.
Mayor Larry Gene Davis informed the board letters were sent out recently notifying 19 residents and two businesses in town they are behind on their garbage collection bills.
The total amount owed the city for garbage collection from the 21 accounts is $4,623.12.
Davis announced Tuesday the city has received three payments since letters were mailed out.
He told The Messenger the board will give the remaining delinquent accounts until Oct. 15 to pay their bills and after that the city will pursue legal action.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, alderman Eddie Fickle updated the board on progress being made on a new tourism brochure promoting Samburg. He also reported changes are being made to the city’s tourism billboard in Southeast Missouri.
Funding for the tourism projects is coming from the city’s hotel/motel tax revenues, which are now being used to promote Samburg rather than being given to the Reelfoot Tourism Council.
Fickle informed the board the new tourism brochure is nearly completed.
The brochure is expected to be ready by the board’s next scheduled meeting.
Once the brochure is published, it will be used to promote Samburg tourism at upcoming trade shows and will also be distributed to various tourism venues across the region.
In other action Tuesday, the board:
• Approved a request from the Bunch family to return ownership of the boat ramp next to Samburg City Hall  to the Bunch family. The boat ramp was donated to the city and county by the late George Bunch Sr. and now the city has agreed to have the deed to the ramp returned to the family. The Bunch family has publicly stated the ramp will remain a public boat ramp to Reelfoot Lake.
• Was informed by Davis that street repair work in the city will be taken care of in the spring.
• Agreed to budget up to $500 for the city’s Christmas parade, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 3.
