Central, UC runners
among West’s best
The runners from Obion Central and Union City are warmed up for regionals.
Running the same course that will be used for the Region 7A-AA Cross Country Meet next week, the two Rebel teams and UC’s entrant fared well Thursday afternoon in the Best of West Meet at OCCHS in Troy.
The Lady Rebels won the girls’ meet, while the Central boys were second. UC’s Daniel Willamson was runner-up by a fraction of a second.
Rachel Jones finished fifth to lead the OC girls, while also medaling and scoring for the Lady Rebels were Peyton Daniel (eighth place), Kris Storey (11th), Brenna Wilkins (12th), Brittney Dodd (14th), Whittney Dodd (17th) and Nicole Storey (19th).
Chelsea Ladd from Dyer County won the race with a time of 19:17.
Finishing second in the team standings was Hardin County, while Fayette Ware placed third.
Williamson was just 37-100ths of a second behind boys’ meet winner Ben Moroney, running a 16:35.85 to Maroney’s 16:35.48.
Drake Campbell finished in eighth place to lead the Rebel boys’ team, followed by Dakota Eaves in 16th place. Also scoring for the boys team were Alex Terrell, Jackson Smith and Austin Riley.
Crockett County was the team champion, followed by Central and Madison Academic.
The regional meet is slated to begin 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
UTM volleyball team
has 2 home matches
The UT Martin volleyball team will look to extend its home winning streak this weekend when it plays host to Morehead State 6 p.m. Friday and Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Saturday.
With its 3-1 home victory Tuesday night against Tennessee Tech, UTM tallied its sixth consecutive win in Skyhawk Fieldhouse — all in OVC play. Overall, the Skyhawks are 14-8 with a 9-3 league record, 21⁄2 games behind first-place Morehead State.
Morehead (16-5, 11-0 OVC) enters the weekend having won 20 straight and 28 of its last 29 OVC matches. This season, the Eagles have won eight of their 11 league matches by a 3-0 margin.
EKU (11-12, 6-6) has lost three straight matches, all on the road. Although the Colonels defeated UTM 3-1 at Richmond on Sept. 23, the Skyhawks have won five straight over EKU at home.
Committee seeks end
to UK athletics board
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A committee has recommended that the University of Kentucky board of trustees form a new committee to oversee athletics at the school and that the UK Athletics Association board of directors consider doing away with itself.
The university said in a statement Thursday that the new committee would be similar to other board of trustees committees that oversee various operations.
The recommendation came from a specially formed committee of trustees that Chairman Britt Brockman formed shortly after former university President Lee T. Todd gave Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart a contract extension and raise without consulting the board of trustees or the Athletics Association board, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
