Nuclear safety, radiation dangers to be featured in program Thursday

Dr. Albert Wiley, medical and technical director of radiation emergency medicine programs at Oak Ridge Associated Universities, will present on nuclear safety and the dangers of radiation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
He will speak in Watkins Auditorium, Boling Univer-sity Center, as part of the university’s Academic Speaker Series.
Wiley is responsible for overseeing the medical care, continuing medical education courses and research conducted by the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS). He is also head of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center at Oak Ridge.
REAC/TS includes physicians, nurses and health physicists who are on call 24/7 and capable of rapid deployment in the event of radiation emergencies worldwide. Wiley travels extensively to provide instruction on diagnosing and treating injuries resulting from ionizing radiation.
Wiley earned a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State University, a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and a doctorate in radiological sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He is board certified in radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, medical physics and radiation protection.
In addition to more than 40 years of medical experience in radiation oncology and nuclear medicine, Wiley has also served nationally and internationally as a consultant and United States medical representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
He has consulted at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and is currently a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, among others.
“Honors Programs is very excited to have such a distinguished scientist as Dr. Wiley visit our campus and share his experiences in the field,” said Lionel Crews, director of honors programs. “His expertise in the field of nuclear safety will give an inside view of what plans are in place to deal with potential disasters.”
Wiley’s presentation is co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the UT Martin chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) as one of their International Year of Chemistry speakers.
