Methamphetamine seminar set for Saturday at DSCC

A special seminar for nurses, emergency medical responders and law enforcement officials will be presented Saturday by the Dyersburg State Community College Continuing Education Division, the Nursing and Allied Health Division and the DSCC Alumni Association.
It is called “Methamphetamine: How to work with this madness.”
The seminar, which starts at 9 a.m. in the Glover Education Building on the Dyersburg campus, addresses issues related to methamphetamine addiction and the impact it has on healthcare systems and the community. While it is tailored for those who work in nursing and criminal justice, it is open to anyone interested in attending.
The first session will be presented by Jana Paschal, Emergency Depart-ment Nursing director for Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. She will speak on the issues related to emergency care and health care for overdoses. The focus will be on methamphetamine, but treatment protocols for other drugs will be discussed.
Following Ms. Paschal, Brent Hill, a K-9 officer with the Dyersburg Police Department, will make a presentation and will be on hand for a question-and-answer session. He is a licensed EMT and is certified as a Basic Methamphetamine Lab Technician by  the Tennessee Methamphetamine Task Force.
The third session will be presented by DSCC assistant professor of criminal justice Michael Brooks. He will present “Drug Endangered Children” — a collaborative, multi-disciplinary effort to prevent drug related harm to children; and to rescue, defend, shelter and support children who suffer physical and psychological harm caused by the manufacture, distribution, sale and use of illegal drugs and abuse of prescription drugs and alcohol.
The program will close with lunch provided by Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. During this time, the DSCC nursing faculty will present a special program celebrating the life of Peggy Pendergrast, the founding director of the DSCC nursing program.
In addition, those attending will have the chance to tour DSCC’s recently-renovated chemistry lab in Glover — a state-of-the-art learning facility. Tours of the West Tennessee Healthcare Nursing Simu-lation Laboratory will also be offered.
Those who wish to attend must register with the DSCC Continuing Education Office by today. The cost is $50 per person.
Paid members of the DSCC Alumni Association will receive special pricing as a benefit of their membership.  For those who are DSCC alumni, but not currently members, part of the registration fee will be directed to the Alumni Association to establish membership.
