Ridgemont-SF games
still on for Thursday

The Ridgemont at South Fulton middle school basketball games will be played on Thursday night, as scheduled.
Reports to The Messenger on Tuesday were that all such contests would be postponed due to the Dyersburg at Obion Central football game to be played on Thursday.
The decision to either play or reschedule was reportedly left up to the individual schools, and R’mont and SF have elected to go on as scheduled, starting at 6 p.m.
The Black Oak-Ridgemont game has been rescheduled.

The $3 cost will buy a bowl of chili and all the fixings.

UTM’s Hughes earns
OVC, national awards

UT Martin junior nose guard Montori Hughes has been named the adidas OVC Defensive Player of the Week for his effort this past Saturday against Eastern Illinois.
Hughes, a 6-5, 305 defensive lineman from Murfreesboro, led the Skyhawks with 10 tackles and 5.5 TFLs  (tackles for loss) of 24 yards in their 24-23 victory over host Eastern Illinois.
Hughes added a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry. He served as the catalyst for the Skyhawk defense which recorded three sacks and 14 TFLs of 46 yards. The defense shut down the Eastern Illinois running game, limiting the Panthers to minus-5 yards on 34 carries.
Hughes’ forced fumble and fumble recovery led to UT Martin’s first touchdown of the game against Eastern Illinois.
Hughes is the second Skyhawk this season to be named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. Ben Johnson earned the accolade Oct. 9.
