Union City applying for grant for water tank

By: Donna Ryder Messenger Associate Editor

Union City hopes to soon have an additional water tank to be used for storage and to facilitate the expansion of the Northwest Tennessee Regional Industrial Center.
On Tuesday night, the Union City Council approved a resolution authorizing the submission of an application to the Tennessee Department of Eco-nomic and Community Develop-ment for Tennessee Industrial Infrastructure funds.
City manager Don Thornton said the city is applying for $750,000 to be used toward erecting a 500,000-gallon water tank on the north end of the industrial center. The city would add a match of $172,500 for a total project cost of $922,500.
He said the presence of an industry is not required to get the grants and cities developing industrial parks can apply for them. Should Union City ever want to develop the northern part of the industrial center the water tank would be required, he said, adding if the city does not get the grant, it’s a project that would have to be undertaken, but not right now.
The council also approved the expenditure of funds prior to the grant’s being dispersed. Thornton said this would only be needed if the city is comfortable the grant will be awarded.
After the meeting was opened in prayer by city attorney Jim Glasgow Jr., the council:
• Received a financial statement which shows the city has spent $780,000 more than it has received in revenue. Thornton said the report does not include sales tax collections from November and December, both very good months. He said the city is still collecting property tax and rural fire fees as well.
He said the water and sewer funds are making a profit.
• Agreed to sell a vacant lot at 1604 North Clover St. to Jimmy and Debra Temple for $2,950.
• Learned the fire trucks, which were expected in February, will not be delivered until June. The city has been informed the company will start constructing the trucks April 1.
• Heard the council will be asked to authorize the accepting of bids for the demolition of several properties at its next meeting.
• Was informed the property for the Discovery Park of America is not completely in the city limits, but that the city is working on the process to annex it.
• Heard the new police car should be delivered within the next three weeks.
• Learned the city is performing weekly inspections of the animal shelter.
