MLK Jr. Observance set for Monday in Union City

The contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be recalled Monday in an observance planned by the Union City Branch of NAACP and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Tennessee.
A motorcade will leave Reelfoot Shopping Center and wind through the city, ending at Mount Zion CME Church on the corner of Greenwood and College streets. The church is one of the oldest in the community.
Participants are asked to meet at the south end of the shopping center parking lot no later than 11:45 a.m. The motorcade will begin to move at noon.
Those taking part are asked to turn on lights or flashers during the motorcade.
Scooters and bicycles may also join the procession, a spokesman said.
A short memorial service will be held at Mount Zion and will feature the Boys & Girls Club Choir and Drama Team, city and county elected officials and members of the community and NAACP members.
As the program concludes, those taking part will be able to hear Dr. King’s famous stirring words related to freedom and equality.
Organizers are hoping for a large number of participants in the motorcade and at the church.Published in The Messenger 1.17.08
