Final week winners  for football contest

Union City’s Donald Babb and Wendell Duke tied for the top spot and will receive the top $20 prize in the final Messenger football contest.
Both Babb and Duke missed one of 10 picks and were the closest to the high-point total of 48.
Brian Daniels of Union City and South Fulton’s Ben Vaughn also missed one game each and guessed 52 as the most points scored. They will get a $10 check apiece.
Third prize ($5) went to South Fulton’s Andre Cruse and Jeff Ward of Union City, both of whom missed two games and guessed 42 as the high point total.

Memphis fires Porter
after brief bad tenure

MEMPHIS (AP) — Memphis fired head coach Larry Porter on Sunday after he went 3-21 in two seasons at his alma mater.
The university announc-ed Porter’s dismissal in a release. Porter’s firing came just hours after Saturday’s 44-7 loss at Southern Mississippi, leaving the Tigers 2-10 this season. Fan interest in the program has been diminishing, including an estimated 2,500 for the Tigers’ home finale against Marshall on Nov. 17.
There was no immediate timetable for hiring Porter’s replacement.

Lady Vols fall to No. 1
in tribute to Summitt

KNOXVILLE (AP) — With Tennessee playing strong defense, Brittney Griner realized just her presence on the court wouldn’t be enough for Baylor to win this one.
So the preseason All-America focused a little harder, and Griner scored 17 of her 26 points in the second half as the top-ranked Lady Bears pulled out a 76-67 win against the No. 6 Lady Volunteers.
The matchup was dubbed a “We Back Pat” game in support of Summitt, who announced in August she had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type.
Both teams wore purple shirts that said “We Back Pat” while warming up, and Tennessee presented $75,000 checks from the proceeds of T-shirt sales to Alzheimer’s Tennessee and the UT Medical Center for Alzheimer’s research, treatment and education programs.
