The Gen. Otho French Strahl Camp 176, Sons of Confederate Veterans, conducted its November meeting recently at the Obion County Museum on Edwards Street in Union City. There were 12 members and five guests in attendance.
The meeting was called to order by commander Ralph Nichols, who led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag and the Sons of Confederate Veterans flag salute. Compatriot Raymond Woodard led the opening prayer.
Local author, historian and former camp commander Bill Threlkeld gave an interesting presentation about the 1906 murder of the Rev. B.L. Holder of Troy. His presentation included court documents of the trial and conviction of the Rev. Holder’s son, Lee Holder. At best, Lee Holder’s conviction was based upon circumstantial evidence and it is doubtless he would not have been convicted in today’s court.
Other items of business included:
• The financial report given by adjutant Jimmy Williams.
• Discussion of a headstone dedication at the Holloman Cemetery near Mason Hall. It is still pending.
• Discussion of the need to clean up Holman Cemetery across the road from Memorial Gardens. Compatriot Robert Holman’s grandfather is buried there, as well as Robert Kirkland’s grandfather. Both men are Confederate veterans.
• A report from compatriots Danny Isbell and Bill Foster on their attending the commander’s call meeting in Columbia.
Compatriot Raymond Woodard lead the closing prayer.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the nation’s largest southern heritage, history and honor organization open to all male descendants of a Confederate soldier who served honorably in the War for Southern Independence.
