Lady Vols top Texas
with late scoring run

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Shekinna Stricklen scored 20 points and Tennessee knocked off Texas 73-57 in women’s college basketball on Sunday.
Vicki Baugh scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lady Volunteers (4-2).
Tennessee used an 11-0 run to take a 38-27 lead with 1:28 to go in the first half.
Texas (5-2) wouldn’t go away, and a 3-pointer by Chelsea Bass cut the Lady Vols’ lead to 59-53 with 8:50 to play.
Two minutes later, Johnson hit a layup that launched a 10-0 run and put the game out of reach.
Former Obion County Central standout Chassidy Fussell scored 14 for Texas.

Pittsburgh holds off
UT comeback bid

KNOXVILLE (AP) — John Johnson converted a three-point play with 2 seconds left to seal No. 17 Pittsburgh’s 61-56 win over Tennessee on Saturday in the Big East/SEC Challenge.
The Panthers (7-1) led by eight with 1:46 to go when the Volunteers began to foul.
Pittsburgh’s Ashton Gibbs was called for a flagrant foul after elbowing Trae Golden, who was trying to foul him. Golden sank one of two foul shots, and Cameron Tatum hit a layup to cut the Panthers’ lead to 5.
The Panthers missed the front end of two 1-and-1 free-throw opportunities, and a 3 by Golden with 11 seconds left cut Pittsburgh’s lead to 58-56.
Tatum led Tennessee (3-4) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Golden and Jeronne Maymon each added 12 points.

WR Rogers still
on Vols’ team

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee coach Derek Dooley says sophomore wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers has neither been suspended nor dismissed from the team.
The Volunteers coach released a statement Friday in response to multiple media reports in Knoxville that Rogers’ status with the team was uncertain.
