UTM’s Elswick gets
volleyball selection

Kasey Elswick, a member of the UT Martin volleyball team, has been named as one of 14 members on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Midwest Region squad.
A junior libero out of Louisville, Ky., Elswick is the only player from the Ohio Valley Conference recognized on the team, joining players from the Conference-USA and Horizon League ranks.
Already one of the most accomplished players in program history, Elswick rose to new heights in 2011, capping off her record-setting season with her second straight OVC Defensive Player of the Year award. She also was responsible for eight out of 12 OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors and ranked No. 2 in the country in digs per set (6.50).
The defensive specialist rewrote all the team’s most hallowed digs records this fall.
Off the court, Elswick also earned Capital One Academic All-District first team accolades for her 3.96 cumulative Grade Point Average.

TSSAA says ‘no’
to early practice

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Sec-ondary School Athletic Association Legislative Council has decided against a proposal to give football teams an extra week of practice before their first game.
Under the proposal, practice in pads would have started July 23 next season.  Instead, it will begin July 30, with the first games Aug. 17 for most schools.
The vote Wednesday was 5-4. According to The Tennessean newspaper, officials said heat in mid-July was a factor against the proposal.
