Black Oak drops pair
to Sharon in JV hoops

Black Oak dropped a pair of junior high basketball games to Sharon recently, losing 25-7 in the girls’ game and 40-9 in the boys’ contest.
Annabelle Baltezor grabbed nine rebounds for the Lady Eagles (1-11), who were shut out in the first half.
Chance Basham had six points, and Chase Truett scored the other three for the Eagle boys (0-12).

Ex-Lady Reb Fussell
leads Texas to win

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Chassidy Fussell scored 14 of her 22 points in the first half and Texas rolled past Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Fussell, a product of Obion County Central High School, was 8-of-12 shooting and had three 3-pointers. Yvonne Anderson scored 14 and Cokie Reed and Ashleigh Fontenette each had 10 for the Longhorns (7-2).
Chigozianyi Okwum-abua led Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-8) with 10 points. The Golden Lions were playing their second ranked opponent in four days after losing at No. 8 Kentucky on Dec. 11.

Deal officially done
for Furcal, Cards

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals finalized a two-year, $14 million free agent deal with shortstop Rafael Furcal, a trade deadline pickup who helped them in their run to the World Series title.
The deal was completed Wednesday after the 34-year-old Furcal passed a physical. He gets salaries of $6 million next year and $7 million in 2013, along with a $1 million signing bonus.
Furcal batted .255 with St. Louis, solidifying the defense along with the leadoff slot. He turned 36 double plays, most among National League shortstops, in the final two months.
 
UTM’s Elswick earns
volleyball recognition

Kasey Elswick, a junior libero on the UT Martin volleyball team, has earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American honorable mention accolades.
A total of 124 players were recognized by the AVCA, comprising of three teams and honorable mention selections. Elswick was the only player to represent the Ohio Valley Conference and is the first All-American in UT Martin’s rich volleyball history.
She is  two-time defening OVC Defensive Player of the Year.
