UTM’s Butler gets
another award

Sophomore guard Heather Butler was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading UT Martin to back-to-back victories this past week against Evansville and Southern Illinois.
Butler scored 22 points against Evansville and followed that up with 25 points versus Southern Illinois. She hit six three-pointers in the two games and moved to third on the school’s all-time list. She has scored in double-figures in 42 straight games.
She finished the week with 23.5 points per game to go with six assists and six steals.
Butler was named preseason All-OVC and College Sports Madness’ OVC Player of the Week twice this year.
Butler’s accolade marks the third time this season a Skyhawk has been named adidas OVC Player of the Week.

UK’s Malone out
with knee injury

LEXINGTON (AP) — Kentucky has announced walk-on guard Sam Malone tore a ligament in his left knee in the Wildcats’ win on Saturday night against Chattanooga.
Malone played in six games and has scored a total of six points and has two rebounds in 13 minutes while becoming a fan favorite. Malone played three minutes in the third-ranked Wildcats’ 87-62 victory over Chattanooga.
Head coach John Calipari says Malone is a great teammate and an even better person.
Calipari says it’s Malone’s fourth knee injury. There is no timetable for his return or for the surgery to repair the ACL in his left knee. Recovery typically takes nine to 12 months.
The 5-foot-11 freshman averaged 14 points, nine assists and four steals as a senior at Scituate High in Massachusetts.

LSU’s Miles named
nation’s top coach

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU’s 2011 season will be remembered for challenging Les Miles’ crisis-management skills over and over again.
It could also go down as the greatest season in the history of a program that has been around since 1893.
Now within one more victory of an unbeaten season and a BCS national title, Miles has been voted The Associated Press Coach of the Year.
Thirty of 56 votes cast went to Miles. Bill Snyder of Kansas State was second with 16, Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State had six, Brady Hoke of Michigan got three and Lane Kiffin of  USC had one.
