The Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament has been an area holiday tradition for nearly half a century.
This season will be no different as the high school basketball tourney enters its 47th year.
With an eight-team, double-sided bracket for boys’ and girls’ teams, the tournament will feature teams from throughout West Tennessee beginning two days after Christmas at Westview High School.
Among those 16 teams will be four from Weakley County as both boys’ and girls’ squads from Westview and Gleason are slated to play.
In addition, schools sending both their varsity prep teams will be South Fulton, Gibson County, Henry County, Milan and Madison Academic while Tipton-Rosemark will complete the girls’ bracket and Station Camp will take the final spot in the boys’ event.
The two tournaments will feature 24 games in all, eight on each of the three days, and will separate teams from eighth place to first.
All girls’ games will be played at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the boys’ games will start each day at 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The event begins on Tuesday and runs through Thursday of next week.
Opening-round girls’ games, in order of their starting times, will see Henry County playing Milan, Madison Academic facing Tipton-Rosemark, Gibson County playing South Fulton and Westview playing Gleason.
The boys’ openers include, in order, Henry County against Milan, South Fulton vs. Gibson County, Station Camp against Madison Academic and, again, Westview vs. Gleason.
Dresden’s two teams will also be involved in holiday events after Christmas Day.
The Lions will cross the northern border to play three games in the Murray Bank Laker Classic at Calloway County High School in Murray and the Lady Lions will play once at Huntingdon.
Dresden’s boys will open up against Fulton County 1:30 p.m. Thursday with their next two games — opponent and time — to be determined by bracket play. Each team will play three games.
Also included in the Calloway event will be a Hopkinsville team that took a 6-1 record into the Paducah Christmas Tournament this week and a Mayfield squad that had won four straight prior to playing in that same Paducah event.
Fellow West Tennessee entrant Bradford is in the field along with Fulton City, Fulton County, Hopkins County Central and the host school.
The Lady Lions’ lone holiday game will come on Friday of next week against Houston County, game time set for 1:30 p.m. Published in The WCP 12.22.11
