MAYSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Maysville middle school teacher is using Twitter as a study tool.
Ella Bowling told The Ledger Independent most of her science students at Mason County Middle School use Twitter or other social networking sites so she decided to incorporate it into her lessons.
Bowling said she’s been discouraged from using social media in the classroom, but decided “if you can’t beat them, join them.”
“Students are going to use social media so why not find a way to get them to use it for an educational purpose,” she said in an email to colleagues.
She decided that her first use of Twitter in the classroom would be to help students review for a unit test. About 40 students participated Dec. 14 and the average test score was 87 percent.
She said she was “pretty pleased” with the outcome and continued tweeting vocabulary words and instructional videos over Christmas break.
