Jr. Twisters drop
conference pair

The Union City Middle School basketball teams dropped a West Tennessee Athletic Conference doubleheader to Three Oaks Thursday, losing the girls’ game 41-27 and then the nightcap 56-38.
Tykesha Vaughn had nine points and five steals for the Lady Tornadoes, while Chynia Hyde was good for eight points and seven rebounds. Caroline Chism yanked down a team-high 10 caroms.
A 25-6 fourth quarter explosion lifted Three Oaks from a two-point deficit to a comfortable victory in boys’ play. UC was outscored 44-14 overall in the second half after leading 24-12 at the intermission.
Joe Wiggins had 19 points and Willaevion Burton pitched in 12 for the Tornadoes, who are now 7-5 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The Twisters did win a B-boys’ game, 34-20. Jack Murrell had nine points and Jack Guess tallied six.
Union City will host Humboldt Monday night with the games to be played at the high school gymnasium.

Racer men earn
ESPN ‘wild card’

The January 21 OVC men’s basketball contest between Murray State and SIU-Edwardsville has been selected for telecast by ESPNU as part of the league’s television package.
When the OVC announced its ESPN basketball schedule on Oct. 5, there were three dates on the schedule designated as “wild card” dates where the game to be aired was not selected until 21 days before the contest, making sure an attractive matchup was televised, instead of having to determine the full schedule a month before the season began.
The Racers are currently one of four undefeated teams in Division I and are ranked No. 18 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 and No. 19 in the AP Top 25.
The game at the Vadal-abene Center will air at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
The other “wild card” dates on the OVC’s ESPN schedule for this year are Thursday, Feb. 2 and Thursday, Feb. 23. Published in The Messenger 1.6.12
