Core Ensemble, a production group dedicated to the performance of chamber music theatre, will perform its show “Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance” at 3 p.m. Jan. 29 in Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center on the main campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin.
“Of Ebony Embers” is a theatrical work for actor, cello, piano and percussion. It is a celebration of the lives of the African-American poets Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay, as seen through the eyes of muralist and painter Aaron Douglas.
The musical score includes works by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, as well as concert music by Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker.
The UT Martin production is sponsored by the Department of Music, the Department of English and Modern Foreign Languages, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the UTM Black Student Association.
The performance is free and open to the public.
For more information, contact Dr. Elaine Harriss, Department of Music chairman, at (731) 881-7400.
