Dresden’s McPeak
to sign with UTM

Dresden senior Tyler McPeak has verbally committed to play football at UT Martin and is expected to sign with the Skyhawks on National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 1.
McPeak has been on the college watch list since his junior season and was a standout both ways for the Lions this past season.
At linebacker, he posted 118 total tackles, included 18 for loss, for a Lions’ defense that allowed 17 points a game.
A standout at tight end as well, McPeak has 27 catches for 391 yards and five touchdowns.
He earned All-District 13A and All-State honors this past season.
McPeak had 235 receiving yards and 135 tackles his junior season.
Dresden made history in 2011 by winning a school-record 12 games and advancing to the state championship for the first time, playing Friendship Christian in the BlueCross Bowl Class 2A title game.

Skyhawk-TSU game
will help fight cancer

In collaboration with the annual Coaches vs. Cancer fund-raising effort, the UT Martin men’s basketball team will be taking donations to help fight the battle against cancer Thursday against Tennessee State.
Tip-off against the Ohio Valley Conference foe is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Fans will have an opportunity to make a contribution at the game on Thursday. All cancer survivors will be granted free admission to the game.
To cap off the nationwide fund raiser, nearly 4,000 head and assistant basketball coaches across the United States will participate in the ninth annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers week.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaborative initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), empowering coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
Since 1993, the initiative has raised more than $75 million to fund groundbreaking research, providing up-to-date cancer literacy, advocate for public health policies and deliver services to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

UT Martin pair
in baseball elite

Junior pitcher Alec Mills and sophomore designated hitter Phil Sorensen — both members of The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team — have been named to College Sports Madness’ All-Ohio Valley Conference preseason second team.
Both Mills and Sorensen played a big role in the Skyhawks’ historical season in 2011 — a year in which UT Martin won its first OVC Tournament game in program history. Mills is one of six pitchers recognized, while Sorensen is one of 10 infielders.
Mills’ 7.50 strikeout per nine innings ratio was the ninth-best mark in the league.
Entering full-time status on Feb. 27, Sorensen compiled 15 doubles, four home runs and 33 RBI. Overall, he finished with 12 multi-hit games, seven multiple-RBI outings and had a pair of four-hit performances.
