UTM's Newsome

gets ‘Mad’ honor

UT Martin’s Jasmine Newsome was named College Sports Madness’ Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for her exceptional performance during the past week.
Newsome helped lead UTM to victories over Austin Peay, Murray State and Jacksonville State. She averaged 18.7 points, seven rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.
She recorded her first career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds against Murray State, a game where she also reached the career 1,000-point total in the opening minutes of the game.
Newsome is the second fastest UT Martin player to score 1,000 points. The Millington native accomplished the feat in 55 games. Newsome’s teammate Heather Butler scored her 1,000th point earlier this season, doing so in 50 games.
Newsome scored 27 points and had eight assists in the game at Austin Peay.
This is the second time this season (Nov. 28, 2011) that Newsome was named College Sports Madness OVC Player of the Week.
UT Martin (10-1 in the OVC) returns to action Saturday when it hosts league-leading Eastern Illinois (11-0 in the OVC). Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.

Skyhawks’ DH
is All-OVC pick

UT Martin sophomore Phil Sorensen has been named as one of 13 players on the 2012 preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference baseball team, as released by the league.
Named as the league’s best returning designated hitter, Sorensen is one of two underclassmen on the preseason squad. This is the second preseason award for Sorensen, who also was named to the College Sports Madness All-OVC preseason team last month.
The Erie, Pa., native was a sensation in 2011, producing a line of .340/.400/.537 on his way to All-OVC first team and Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Fresh-man All-American accolades.
After Sorensen’s insertion into the starting lineup on March 1, he had a dozen multi-hit games — five in conference play.
He tallied a pair of four-hit performances (against Jacksonville State and SIU Edwardsville), while also driving in a career-high six runs against SIU Edwardsville on April 10.
Sorensen ripped 15 doubles and four homers in 147 at-bats, accumulating 33 RBI. In conference play, he hit a team-best .403 (25-for-62), with a .441 on-base percentage and .613 slugging percentage. He hit safely in 29 of his 40 games.

Another Tide coach
now on Vols’ staff

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has hired Derrick Ansley to coach the Volunteers’ cornerbacks.
Ansley spent the past two season as a defensive assistant at Alabama, where he worked with newly-hired Tennessee defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri. Ansley spent the last two months working as an assistant to Central Florida coach George O’Leary.
At Alabama, Ansley worked with first-team All-American safety Mark Barron and second-team cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick.
Ansley also spent five seasons as an assistant at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., and is a 2005 graduate of Troy, where he started 40 consecutive games as a defensive back.
