Dresden, Lady ’Dogs cruise to semis

Posted: Friday, February 17, 2012 12:00 pm

Dresden and Gleason both got off to fast starts, and now they will play on for awhile.
The Lady Lions built a 15-point lead after one quarter, while the Lady Bulldogs held their opponent to just one point in the opening period to win their respective District 13A Tournament quarterfinals games Tuesday night.
Playing at home as higher seeds, No. 1 Dresden handled Bruceton 70-25 while No. 2 Gleason took care of McKenzie 48-26.
Both Weakley County teams move on to the district semifinals, which will be played tonight at Clarksburg.
Dresden will play Big Sandy at 6 p.m., followed by Gleason facing Huntingdon at 7:30.
The two local teams are guaranteed three more postseason games, including a trip to the Region 7A Tournament next week.
Wins tonight will lock up home games in the opening round of regional play before the tournament shifts to Trenton.
For Bruceton and McKenzie, the 2011-12  season comes to a one-and-done end.
Dresden 70, B’ton 25
Amy McAlpin scored 20 points and Allie Phillips added 12 as the Lady Lions rolled.
Dresden took a 21-6 lead after one period and then stretched that to 42-16 by halftime. The Lions’ lead was 62-23 at the end of three quarters.
McAlpin knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in her game-best scoring effort.
Gleason 48, McKenzie 26
Alex King popped for 21 points to lead three Lady Bulldog players in double figures.
Calay Smith added 15 points, and Briana Jones scored 12 for Gleason.
Emma Arnold had 10 for the Lady Rebels.
Gleason allowed only one point in the first quarter and two in the second in building a 26-3 halftime advantage.
The score was 39-15 after three frames. Published in The WCP 2.16.12
