Dance travel study planned

Posted: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 10:04 am

In early March, eight University of Tennessee at Martin dance students will be experiencing first hand what some call “the center of the dance world.”
Seven dance education majors and one minor will be taking technique classes from two renowned New York City dance studios, Steps and Dance New Amsterdam, as part of a UT Martin travel-study trip.
“These two dance studios are known for their professional classes and top notch dance instructors,” said Sarah McCormick, assistant professor of visual and theatre arts, who will be heading up the trip.
While in New York the students will also have the opportunity to take a K-12 education movement workshop at the prestigious Laban Movement Center and will explore the New York Public Library’s collection of Jerome Robbins dance books held at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. They will receive three hours of course credit for the class, Fine Arts 467.
The trip scheduled for March 4-9, during the university scheduled spring break, is one of many2012 travel-study opportunities for UT Martin students, some of which are also open to the public. Students are eligible for travel-study scholarships provided by the Student Government Association
“I would like to thank the International Travel Studies Offices, Office of Development, Doug Cook, chair of the Department of Visual and Theatre Arts, SGA and Lynn Alexander dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, for their support of this course,” McCormick said.
The 2012 dance intensive travel-study is currently at capacity, but individuals interested in taking advantage of other UT Martin travel-study opportunities may visit http://www.utm.edu/departments/globalstudies/tstudies.php or contact the UT Martin Center for International Education at 881-1023.
