First State Bank's Clark recognized for excellence

Weakley County banker John C. Clark — president, CEO and director of First State Bank and Community First Bancshares — has been named a Leader in Banking Excellence.
The Tennessee Bankers Association will display a plaque in his honor at the TBA’s new headquarters in Nashville.
Clark has spent his 31-year career serving the same organization.
In 1976, Clark began working as a teller at the Bank of Sharon. Five years later, he was elected president of the bank. He led the Bank of Sharon through incorporation and became president and CEO of Sharon Bancshares Inc. in 1987.
Over the next 12 years, the one-bank holding company became a four-bank holding company, Community First Bancshares Inc. In 2003, the banks merged into the present First State Bank.
“John Clark’s devotion to First State Bank is evident in the success of the bank over the last 30 years,” TBA President Brad Barrett said. “He has been committed to helping the bank develop into the billion-dollar bank it is today.”
Clark is also loyal to the Weakley County community. He serves as a board member and treasurer of the Weakley County Economic Development Board and as a board member of the Tennessee Business Roundtable.
He is the former director and president of the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Weakley County United Way and West Tennessee United Way.
Clark has served on the development committee and on the banking advisory committee for the Horace Dunagan Chair of Excellence at the University of Tennessee at Martin and on the University of Tennessee School of Business Administration Advisory Board. He is a former board member and chairman of Volunteer Community Hospital.
Leaders in Banking Excellence is a new initiative by the TBA to recognize and celebrate exceptional bankers throughout Tennessee’s history, Barrett said. A special plaque commemorating each honoree is displayed in the association’s new headquarters building in Nashville.
TBA member banks can submit nominations for the honor and applications are reviewed by TBA staff and board members. Clark was nominated by First State Bank’s board of directors.
“One of the main missions of the Tennessee Bankers Association is to encourage our members to be involved in making our industry better and in making their communities better places to work and live,” Barrett said. “The Leaders in Banking Excellence recognizes those who have made a difference and we hope it will be an inspiration to other bankers across the state.”
