Pianist Bill Kelly will tickle the ivories of Dyersburg State Community College’s Steinway tonight to raise funds for the David C. Kelly Memorial Scholarship fund.
The fund was established by Kelly in memory of his brother,David Kelly.
David Kelly was a charter member of DSCC’s faculty who began teaching at Dyersburg State in the fall of 1969 as an associate professor of English. He assisted with many campus activities, was a Student Government Association sponsor and was co-editor of The Eagle Eye, a literary anthology produced by the college.
He was known to many West Tennesseans as a singer. Throughout the years, he performed at numerous area social functions. He was also a songwriter, publishing over 1,000 works in his lifetime. Most notably, his song “Whirlwind” was recorded by country singing star Charlie Rich at Sun Studios in Memphis.
He received his bachelor of arts degree in English from Lambuth University with highest honors in 1965 and his master of arts degree in English from the University of Memphis in 1967. He taught at Southside High School in Memphis and at Lambuth University in Jackson prior to joining the faculty at DSCC.
Kelly died March 2, 2002, after an extended battle with cancer.
The concert will take place tonight in the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium in the Campus Activities Building on the DSCC campus. Bill Kelly plans to play both classical and Broadway pieces, including a number of his favorites by Gershwin.
The program will start at 7:30 p.m. and those who wish to attend are asked to make a minimum donation of $10.
